Bandwidth refers to the amount of data that may be transferred from one point to another within a given unit of time. As bandwidth increases, the amount of data that is transferred also increases. An internet connection with a higher amount of bandwidth can transfer data at a faster rate than a lower bandwidth connection. The amount of bandwidth one has determines the efficiency and speed of internet connectivity.

Anytime you connect to the internet, you are using bandwidth to transfer data. This includes email, remote file backup, and any other hosted service. There is an increasing trend toward hosted applications, meaning that even things like word processing or image editing use bandwidth since the program and document files are stored remotely instead of on the computer workstation.

Bandwidth is also required for streaming and downloading videos and music, contributing to the increasing demand among consumers and businesses alike. There is also a growing market for manufacturing equipment, household appliances, and other devices that are connected to the internet for monitoring, reporting, data processing, and other functions. This sector is often referred to as the Internet of Things.

The demand for bandwidth will continue to increase as businesses and consumers become more and more dependent on having an internet connection for many routine tasks. Although a large percentage of American consumers are still using dial-up services, there is no doubt that high-capacity cable or fiber bandwidth will soon be considered a necessity.

Broadband internet access refers to a high-speed connection to the internet. Broadband is a more advanced form of connectivity than dial-up connections. Broadband internet connections may be provided via satellite, cable, or fiber.
Fiber to the Home (FTTH) refers to the delivery of a communications signal over optical fiber from the operator’s switching equipment all the way to a home or business, replacing the use of older infrastructure such as telephone wires and coaxial cables. FTTH is a newer method to provide significantly higher bandwidth to consumers and businesses alike. Fiber connections provide more robust internet, voice, and video services.
